This Pewter Cross, in typical Northumbrian style of long
shaft and small cross head, features the inhabited vinescroll, a symbol of Christianity, and interlacing knotwork, reminiscent of the stone crosses produced at
the twin monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow in the
8th Century.

St Cuthbert's Wall Cross







   
 
St Cuthbert is believed to have been born in Melrose in 635 AD. In his early years as a shepherd he witnessed St Aidan's ascent into heaven.
Prior then Bishop of Lindisfarne, he died on Inner Farne in 687 AD., his coffin being carried for 7yrs around Northumbria to escape the Viking raids, eventually resting in Durham.
